The Centre was established by Prof.Dr.Süheyla Artemel and Prof.Dr.Nedret Kuran-Burçoglu in September 1991, with the objective of conducting interdisciplinary research in the field of European studies, the emphasis being on the comparative study of Turco-European relations. It aims to provide an academic and intellectual forum at the international level for academics, intellectuals, and members of the private sector who are related to all disciplines of social sciences. The Centre also organizes conferences, seminars, lectures, courses for public, private and academic institutions in subjects related to its field. In 1997 Prof.Dr.Nedret Kuran Burcoglu became the director of the Centre and she started a new process in order to broaden the basis of the Centre. This work merged with the view of the University Senate is pursued further. In May 2000, the University Senate changed its name to CES and changed the scope of the Centre as to have a broader basis.

The Centre's Executive Board consists of five academics who are from various academic disciplines due to the interdisciplinary structure of the Centre. The activities of the Centre are monitored by the Executive Board, and proposed projects are approved during its meetings. The Director of the Centre is also a member of this Board.
The Centre for European Studies aims to promote interdisciplinary research in the field of European Studies with specific reference to Turco-European relations and the relations with European Union. Since its establishment the Centre has developed valuable contacts with various European institutions and networks and has conducted research in various fields. The networking experience of the Centre is now constituting a valuable step towards more integration with Europe in the field of international academic projects.
Following the realization of the Customs Union with European Union, and later on following the candidacy prospect in Helsinki summit the Centre has broadened its focus even more on the EU related topics. The Centre holds the following aims which are presented below among its present and future policy objectives:
A. To develop new projects geared to presentation of Turkey abroad from scientific and unbiased perspectives; to define the problems behind communication and presentation of Turkey and Turkish nation to the outside world; and to conduct research towards finding solutions to the existing problems
B. To create an interdisciplinary educational model which will allow individuals to increase their power of making synthesis, team-working, etc. By following the example of leading countries in EU countries in the field, the Centre wishes to highlight the leading position of our University in the field of European studies as in other fields in Turkey. The Centre has reached the level to have the support of leading institutions in Europe in realizing this aim.
C. Apart from the research conducted, and intensive courses realized in relation to local and foreign students, the Centre is planning courses that are open to public and private sector and enable the society in general to make use of its expertise in the field of European Studies.
D. The Centre, by way of strengthening the already existing strong ties with the universities and the NGO's of the member states of European Union, will develop a stronger profile for Bogaziçi University and Turkey during the process of integration with Europe. Moreover, it will improve the standards for an interdisciplinary and multidimensional academic framework which will be a must in this millennium. The Centre has the experience and high level expertise to establish the necessary steps towards this aim via the work and links realized since its establishment.
The Centre was given a grant by Council of Europe in 1991 in order to launch the project "A Common European Identity in a Multi-Cultured Continent" in 1992. The project had two stages. First, a workshop was organized on the subject with the participation of prominent scholars from various European universities in April 1992. Second, as a result of the workshop, an international intensive course of two weeks was designed in December 1992 in Istanbul, which attracted great interest from students abroad. The results of the project is published as a book which is believed to be of interest for people who are working in the field.
Apart from the project of Council of Europe, the Centre members started a weekly series of lectures on the cultural heritage of Istanbul in collaboration with an American firm, GCT, which lasted until 1994.
The year 1993 marked the cooperation of the Centre with distinguished European Foundations such as the European Cultural Foundation, and the Felix Meritis Foundation which are both based in Amsterdam. The Gulliver project of the Felix Meritis Foundation, which aims the exchange of artists, authors, intellectuals at European level has been launched during the conference held in Istanbul.
In May 1993, the Centre also hosted jointly with the Philosophy Department of Bogaziçi University, a seminar given by Jean Baudrillard at Bogaziçi University. The theme of his lectures were "The Vanishing Point of Communication", and "Survival and Immortality".
An important development of the year 1994 was inclusion of the Centre in the "Plan Europe 2000: Revisited" project by the European Cultural Foundation. Coordinator of the Centre Prof.Dr.Nedret Kuran-Burçoglu attended successive meetings as representatives from Turkey to discuss the future of Europe in the next millennium from various perspectives within the framework of the project and contributed three papers; "Plan Europe 2000 Revisited: Between Hope and Anxiety", "Hopes and Anxieties towards the Year 2000", "A European?"
In May 1995, two Centre members attended the Gulliver Clearing House Working Conference in Berlin in order to present the development report of the Istanbul Clearing House and to discuss further technical details.
In 1996, the Centre members attended the 1996 HABITAT Conference " HABITAT II: CITY SUMMIT" which was held in Istanbul and submitted a paper on "The Protection of Cultural Heritage: Case Study of Rumeli Hisar" in collaboration with the Bogaziçi University Alumni Association.
In 1996, the Center also started Lectures Series on European Studies in collaboration with the Netherlands Institute in Istanbul. In the framework of these lecture series, Prof.Dr.Nedret Kuran-Burcoglu gave a very successful and interesting conference named "The Image of the Turk in Europe" in the Netherlands Institute, which attracted more than hundred people from various institutions and disciplines and also from press.
In 1997, the Centre has been through a restructring process with its new director, and redefined its objectives and its projects towards the new millenium and beyond covering a broader basis.
In September 1997, the Centre published a book "Multiculturalism: Identity and Otherness", edited by Prof.Dr.Nedret Kuran Burçoglu. The book contains contributions of nineteen international and Turkish academics in the field. For further information and ordering, please contact CES.
In August 1998, the Centre has been the co-organizer of the "International Conference on Heritage, Multicultural Attractions, and Tourism" together with Applied Tourism Administration and Research Centre (ATARC) of Bogaziçi University, Economic and Social History Foundation of Turkey (TTV), and World Tourism Organization (WTO). The Conference took place between August 25-27, 1998 in Lütfi Kırdar Congress Hall in Istanbul. The conference has been very stimulating with the contributions of well-known foreign and Turkish experts from several disciplines. The press has shown great interest to the event and several interviews and the coverage of the conference have been transmitted. The proceedings of the conference is under preparation.
One of the projects of the CES is "The Image of the Turk in Europe from Declaration of the Republic in 1923 till 1990s" which has been developed by Prof.Dr.Nedret Kuran-Burçoglu and conducted under her coordination together with an international network of coordinators. The project participants involve many academics, policy makers, and intellectuals who come from different disciplines. The project has a number of phases, and the first phase which covers Europe is finished and the results are about to be published. Apart from all these, the Centre has been in touch with distinguished European and Turkish universities, foundations, and institutions. Its members have attended and presented papers in various international conferences and published in various topics.
CES is in the process of launching a number of new projects with specific reference to European Union which will cover its agenda in the year 2000 and beyond. It is open to national and international cooperation for interdisciplinary study and research in the field of European studies.
One ongoing project of CES is the "EU Discussion Paper Series" which is realized in coordination with Marmara University European Community Institute and TUNAECS (Turkish University Association of European Community Studies). The Discussion Papers are published on four branches relating to European studies. These are law, economics, culture, and political science, respectively. The aim of discussion papers series is to provide an academic forum in order to discuss topics relevant to European Studies, and to highlight the developments in the field with a policy forming perspective.
The Coodinator of CES Prof.Dr.Nedret Kuran Burcoglu and the new Executive Board Members Prof.Dr.Sumru Ozsoy, Dr.Arzu Iseri, Dr.Elif Alakavuk, Dr.Bülent Sözer have organized a lecture series on European Union related issues under the heading of the "Spring Conferences 2000". The lectures organized at university premises are as follows:
"The Cultural Management of the Turkish Cultural Heritage: the EU Perspective" by Prof.Dr.Peter Bendixen, 25.04.2000. This lecture was organized in cooperation with NHAI.
"Political Insight to Copenhagen Criteria and Accesion of Turkey to EU" by Ambassador Pulat Tacar, 9.05.2000.
"The Cyprus Question and EU-Turkey Relations" by Dr.Christopher Brewin, 16.05.2000.
"The Social Policy in EU and Possible Developments Regarding the Candidacy of Turkey to EU" by Prof.Dr.Hagen Lichtenberg, 16.05.2000.
